Jong-Hi Han, Vice President, General Director, and Head of Samsung Device eXperience (DX), opened the press conference with a presentation on how AI can enhance connected technologies to improve people’s daily lives. The strategy outlined by Han and other speakers focuses on the role of AI in enhancing the connected experience, making it simple and useful at the same time. Samsung also introduced a range of products and services to achieve these goals.

AI-Enabled Displays

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the use of visual displays and consumer electronics. For example, the Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN900D features the NQ8 AI Gen 3 processor, which has eight times more neural networks and twice the speed of its predecessor. With the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, the Samsung Neo QLED 8K automatically upscales low-resolution content to 8K, enhances clarity of fast-moving images with the AI Motion Enhancer Pro, and improves dialogue on screen with the Active Voice Amplifier Pro using AI. The screen is also equipped with the Tizen OS Home operating system, offering the latest applications, personalized content, and service recommendations to enhance the entertainment experience.

Samsung also offers innovative AI-based accessibility features for viewers with different needs. For example, gesture control on the Samsung Neo QLED allows users with hearing impairments to easily navigate, and the Audio Subtitle feature converts on-screen text into real-time audio for people with visual impairments.

Samsung’s AI technology extends to household appliances:

  • The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo All in One washing machine personalizes the washing and drying process by learning user habits and suggesting the best modes using machine learning.
  • The upcoming Bespoke Jet Bot Combo 2 robot vacuum cleaner with steam cleaning function uses AI technology to provide more convenient and efficient cleaning. It can recognize more objects than its predecessor, detect stains, and better understand its surroundings. The vacuum cleaner also adjusts its settings based on the type of floor it is moving on and the length of the carpet.

Spatial Intelligence and User-Device Interaction

Chayon Young, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, discussed how AI is changing our interaction with electronics and Samsung’s vision for SmartThings. The more AI-powered devices people use, the smarter they become, better understanding and supporting everyday life.

Spatial AI is the key to realizing this vision, helping devices understand the user’s home and daily routines to offer a personalized management experience. SmartThings uses LiDAR sensors on robot vacuum cleaners to create a digital floor plan, allowing users to easily check the status and location of all their devices. In March, the company will release an updated 3D Map View for a more detailed view of the home on Samsung smartphones and TVs. Additionally, a simple QR code allows users to add family members and friends to the SmartThings ecosystem, enabling everyone to create their own daily schedules.

AI in Cars

Samsung also announced its development in the automotive industry, specifically its partnership with Hyundai Motor Group. Samsung and Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which was announced prior to the CES 2024 exhibition. Through integration with SmartThings, users will have access to Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services.

This combination offers a wide range of new features, from remotely executing commands in the car while at home (or vice versa) and controlling devices (such as opening/closing garage doors or adjusting home temperature) to using neural networks for deep learning to monitor driver movement and cognitive activity. It also provides personalized reminders and safety notifications. Furthermore, the Ready Care system can now identify whether an adult or child is in the car to adjust in-cabin safety settings.

Author’s Conclusion:

In conclusion, Samsung’s presentation at CES 2024 showcased their commitment to utilizing artificial intelligence to improve people’s lives. Their AI-enabled displays, household appliances, and SmartThings ecosystem offer innovative features and personalized experiences. The partnership with Hyundai in the automotive industry further demonstrates Samsung’s dedication to integrating AI into various aspects of daily life.
